Many of the compositions that made the final cut were pretty obvious, but if we missed your favorite, feel free to let us know.
Be sure to click on each of the song titles to hear them.

1.    “Ke Kali Nei Au” (The Hawaiian Wedding Song) It just wouldn’t be a Hawaiian wedding without a performance of this song, composed in 1925 by Charles E. King.

2.    “To You Sweetheart Aloha” For decades, this song—written by Harry Owens—was the last song played at any Hawaii dance or nightclub.

3.    “I’ll Weave a Lei of Stars for You” One of R. Alex Anderson’s and Jack Owens’s greatest tunes. Singer Emma Veary says, “The lyrics are just breathtakingly romantic.”

4.    “I’ll Remember You” If you want to hear the real Don Ho, forget “Tiny Bubbles” and listen to him sing this classic penned by Kui Lee.

5.    “Night Bird” This composition by the late Mackey Feary was a huge hit for his group Kalapana in the mid-1970s. It captures young love at its most intense.

6.    “Kawaipunahele” This haunting ballad about longing for a former love was Kealii Reichel’s first big hit. A decade and change later, it remains one of his most-requested songs.

7.    “About You” Cecilio Rodrigues never got the girl he wrote this song for. But it was a massive hit from Cecilio & Kapono’s “Elua” album in 1975.

8.    “Better Together” Jack Johnson’s charming, heart-on-sleeve simple love song for his wife has in a few short years become a wedding staple, both in Hawaii and on the Mainland.

9.     “Kiss You in the Morning” by Kalaeloa is about as sappy as a romantic love song can get, but it still incredibly moving throughout.

10.     “Love and Honesty” is truly a love song’s love song. Crooning about a never-ending love, Hawaiian Style Band promises you love and honesty, and they surely do deliver with this local classic.

11.     “Guava Jelly” is not your typical love ballad. However, its message and wonderfully crooned lyrics are those of love and romance … and guava jelly.

12.     “Pretty Face / Jealousy”, a slow, sorrowful tune about someone in love, is about romance as much as it is about yearning. A classic by The Brothers Cazimero, this song is best enjoyed with your beloved at your side, watching the sun set or gazing out on the night sky.

Have Aloha Will Travel EP120: Maui and Oʻahu Travelogue with Cat and Kevin https://www.hawaiimagazine.com/have-aloha-will-travel-ep120-maui-and-oahu-travelogue-with-cat-and-kevin/ Tue, 17 Oct 2023 00:30:59 +0000 https://www.hawaiimagazine.com/?p=122208 Cat and Kevin are back for the 120th episode—wow!—of the Have Aloha Will Travel podcast.

This week, it’s all about travel. Cat—along with ex-associate editor Grace Maeda—made her way over to the Valley Isle to scope out some hidden finds for our upcoming issue of HAWAIʻI Magazine. From elevated bites at Tiffany’s Maui in Wailuku, which is now run by award-winning chef Sheldon Simeon, to staying at the very zen Lumeria Maui Retreat Center in Pāʻia, you won’t want to miss this Maui travelogue.

Kevin kicked it at home on Oʻahu and checked out a town close to his heart, Wahiawā. While the area hasn’t changed too much, there are really great parts of the small centrally located town—some old, some new—that are worth your time, and Kevin shares some of the favorite things he did in Wahiawā during his visit, from hanging out the very hip Surfer Coffee to exploring the verdant Wahiawā Botanical Garden.

Have Aloha Will Travel EP119: Talk Story with Pineapple Farmer Darren Strand https://www.hawaiimagazine.com/have-aloha-will-travel-ep119-talk-story-with-pineapple-farmer-darren-strand/ Tue, 03 Oct 2023 02:33:56 +0000 https://www.hawaiimagazine.com/?p=121999 For a fruit that’s not from Hawaiʻi, locals and visitors alike sure do love pineapples.

A staple fruit in the Islands for centuries, the pineapple—which originated from South America—has become intrinsically linked with Hawaiʻi. And there aren’t a lot of people who know more about the subject than Darren Strand, who joins Cat and Kevin on this episode of the Have Aloha Will Travel podcast. A self-proclaimed “pineapple nerd,” Strand has been in the pineapple farming business for decades, and currently helps run and operate Maui Gold Pineapple Company.

Operating 800 acres of pineapple farms is no joke, and Strand gives us a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to manage such a large operation. Maui Gold was also one of the fastest acting businesses to get involved in relief efforts for those affected by the Maui wildfires, and Strand discusses what the situation has been like since the catastrophe.

Have Aloha Will Travel EP117: How to Travel to Maui https://www.hawaiimagazine.com/have-aloha-will-travel-ep117-how-to-travel-to-maui/ Wed, 06 Sep 2023 20:55:19 +0000 https://www.hawaiimagazine.com/?p=121626 It’s a confusing time to be a visitor with travel plans to Maui.

The discourse on social media has made it even more confusing too, with influencers and locals saying to “stay away.” However, while not affecting areas like Lahaina and certain parts of Kula is definitely the call, the rest of the island—and its many businesses that are reliant of visitors—still need to pay the bills.

To shed more light on the topic, and to help travelers make the right call through these tragic times, Kevin and Cat and joined by the Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority’s chief brand officer Kalani Kaʻanāʻanā to discuss this sensitive topic.

If you’re looking for the links listed for travelers to Maui, the GoHawaii site mentioned by Kaʻanāʻanā can be found at gohawaii.com and residents can go to hawaiitourismauthority.org. And if you’re searching for the previous episode of the Have Aloha Will Travel podcast, which is more about the Maui wildfires and what happened, you can find that here.

Have Aloha Will Travel EP116: Maui Wildfire News and Discussion https://www.hawaiimagazine.com/have-aloha-will-travel-ep116-maui-wildfire-news-and-discussion/ Tue, 22 Aug 2023 00:59:39 +0000 https://www.hawaiimagazine.com/?p=121453 There’s really no way to get around talking about Maui at the moment, the situation there is too immense and too tragic.

Cat and Kevin discuss a few important aspects of the Maui wildfire disaster, as well as the initial timeline of the fire, that’s been unfolding for the past few weeks, which has left hundreds—thousands—without homes, businesses or jobs. And the number of casualties continues to rise.

There has also been a great show of support from residents, visitors and everyone who just loves Maui and its people. However, as Kevin and Cat talk about in the podcast, there have also been some suspect fundraisers on social media platforms that should be avoided. If you’re looking for our more vetted list of fundraising portals and foundations to visit, you can find that here.

Tune In to the Maui Ola Benefit Concert and Support Maui https://www.hawaiimagazine.com/tune-in-to-the-maui-ola-benefit-concert-and-support-maui/ Sun, 20 Aug 2023 04:00:50 +0000 https://www.hawaiimagazine.com/?p=121419 Communities from across Hawaiʻi have been coming together to gather funds and support Maui and its residents in one of their most dire times. And to further drive donations, a group of some of the most talented local musicians have come together to perform at the Maui Ola Benefit Concert, which is being held today at the Bishop Museum Great Lawn from 4 to 6 p.m.

Starting at 5 p.m., local stars like Anuhea, Kimié Miner, Raiatea Helm and more will be taking the stage to help raise awareness and funds for the disastrous Maui wildfires that decimated segments of the island. If you can’t make it in person, however, don’t fret. Below you’ll find a livestream video player that will go live at 6 p.m. HST. (The livestream broadcast will also feature performances from the Maui Ola Benefit Concert taking place on Hawaiʻi Island, at Parker Ranch, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m, today.)

All of the proceeds from tickets sales—which have already sold out—will go entirely to Maui fundraising portals like Maui United Way, Hawaiʻi Community Foundation, Hawaiʻi People’s Fund and the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement. While the livestream is free to view, you can make donations to mauiola.org or any of these Maui fundraisers if you’re feeling inspired by the music and aloha. Anything that you can give would be greatly appreciated, as the Maui wildfires have been one of the most disastrous and deadly tragedies in recent history of Hawaiʻi, and many locals have lost their homes, possessions and businesses.

If you’re not interested in watching or listening to the concert on your computer, it will also be televised on TV stations KGMB, KHNL KFVE, KITV, KIKU, KHON, KHII, PBS Hawaiʻi; and broadcast on radio stations 92.3 KSSK, Island 98.5, Hawaiian 105 KINE, KCCN FM100, KQMQ, HI93 FM, KAPA Hawaiian FM, KPUA 670 AM, KWXX 94.7 FM, KAOY 101.5 FM, KNWB 97.1 FM, KMWB 93.1 and CBS 1500.

But it’s all OK, as Kevin hosts the show solo with one of the more packed episodes of the podcast we’ve ever had. Calvin Canha, Evan Hawkins and Brady O’Rear from reggae band Through the Roots, which was started back in 2007, joins Kevin on this episode of the Have Aloha Will Travel podcast to talk about what it’s like touring Hawaiʻi, how the idyllic views from Pūpūkea can. inspire music and more.

Based in California but with strong ties to Hawaiʻi—two of the four main band members come from the Aloha State—the band started small, playing at backyard parties and local house shows. Now, with three albums in the books and a brand new single just released—Refund—the band tours nationally and recently just finished up its most recent Hawaiʻi tour. You can find out more about them at throughtheroots.com or by following them on Instagram @throughtheroots.

It’s not Haapala’s first time on the show either! Now, two and a half years later, the Koko Head Crater trail is in way, way better shape, and a new platform was built at the summit. Haapala discusses these changes and updates to the trail, and talks about some of her favorite hikes around Oʻahu and her guided-hike business which she started, Aina Lani Hikes, all in this episode.
